Portei                                                                       Zone 9-10

Portei is an interesting Alocasia.  Portei has been the parent to many hybrids produced over the last twenty or thirty years.   The wavy leaf is some thing many people try to get into their crosses.

Mine tend to be an average grower putting out a new leaf every week during the right growing conditions.  When the dead heat of summer comes it slows down a bit and waits for better conditions to come back.  Like most Alocasia's it produces baby plants under ground near the main plant.

I recommend full sun to light shade should you want to see aggressive growth in a single season.  Good fast draining soil is the key to avoid tuber rot.

To my left is a picture of a Portei from the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.  These two plants were about 12 feet high inside a raised bed.  The leaves were several feet long.
