Making your own Potting Soil

One day you will decide to make your own potting soil and I recommend you do so.  When you make this decision you will most likely do an internet search and will be overwhelmed with people telling you the best way.  All I can say is take my mix as just that...."my mix".  I grow mostly tropical plants that need fast draining soil that is high in nutrients.  My mix is more of a modifed mix rather then start from scratch mix.

My Mix

One bag of Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix   (2cu.ft.)
Half a large bag of Peat Moss (2.4cu.ft.)
One bag of Organic Humus (1cu.ft.)
One bag of All Purpose Sand (.5cu.ft.)
Half to one full bag of Mini-Nugget Mulch (1-2cu.ft.)

Directions:
Take you daughter's plastic pool and mix everything together using a hoe or rake.  Keep the bags you will need a place to store the mix once combined.  This is a very simple mix that I find works very well for me.  Feel free to play with the recipe and add or delete items.  Standard store brand potting soil can be used in lieu of Miracle-Gro.  I use the Miracle-Gro because it is very good quality soil with very little weeds if any.  I sometimes use the standard potting soil in this mix if I'm filling the bottom of large pots (10gal or larger).

Last but not least, make sure to wash out your daughter's pool or you'll be in big...big...trouble....

Good luck and email me with any questions.
